Great night at “The Pit Stop”

With our border crossing delay yesterday, we had to find an alternative stop for the night. We belong to an organization called “Boondockers Welcome” which is now part of Harvest Hosts. For a small yearly membership (less than a night of camping) we have access to a network of individuals who have opened their property to campers travelling the country. We’ve been members now for about 8 years and have had some memorable hosts. While last night’s host was only a km off the interstate, his property was a couple hundred feet of heavy bush from the road. However, with windows closed, we had a good night’s sleep and after a brief tour this morning of some of the work he’s done to his property, we were back on the road. Today is a trip through Chicago so we pray for safe travels as we head into Iowa for the night.

Slow going!

So we finally got away from home this morning about 10 – all those last minute things that seem to always take more time than you expect😉. All was good until we got to the Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia/Port Huron. We knew the bridge was under construction and it showed a 45 minute delay for passenger vehicles. However, diesel fuel has been showing at $3.27/gal. for the last couple days at a station we’ve been at before and knew we could get in to. So considering we would be getting somewhere around 80 gallons it looked like a $64 saving from anything we were going to get crossing at Detroit. We made the call to take the longer wait. Bad move – more like a 90 min wait and really not sure what the issue was – most of the wait was after we were over the bridge and in sight of the border patrol. Then when we did get to our fueling station the price was $4.19! By then we were both hungry and tired. So we made a grocery stop instead and are now heading (we hope) to a private home for the night. If it works out we should arrive around 7:30. Waiting on a response to our request. Tomorrow we’ll carry on but have to drive through Chicago- hope we can get good timing with it!
